Rural Community Transportation, Inc.

Rural Community Transportation, Inc. (RCT) is a private nonprofit organization. RCT logoIncorporated in November 1991, RCT was created through a grant from the Federal Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) to coordinate Medicaid transportation services in Orleans and Essex Counties and later expanded to serve the entire Northeast Kingdom. This program served as a model for the development of the Vermont Public Transportation Association’s statewide Medicaid brokerage network. On October 1, 1994, RCT incorporated Lamoille County’s Liberty Transportation Services into its service area. RCT now serves the counties of Caledonia, Essex, Orleans and Lamoille.

Rural Community Transportation, Inc. is a transportation brokerage that uses all modes of transportation (commercial buses, cars, taxis, volunteer drivers, van pools, rideshare) and serves a wide range of passengers through several programs:

  • As the Medicaid/Reach Up broker for Caledonia, Orleans, Essex and Lamoille Counties, RCT coordinates medical trips for income eligible residents.
  • RCT provides transportation for Elderly and Disabled through State and Federal grants.
  • RCT is the coordinator for the statewide Rideshare and Vanpool Programs in Caledonia, Orleans, Essex, Lamoille, Rutland, and Bennington counties.
  • RCT operates two deviated route buses: The St. Johnsbury-Lyndonville Shuttle (The Jay-Lynn) which run makes 5 round trips Monday thru Friday. The Newport-Derby-Derby Line Shuttle (The Highlander) which makes 4 round trips Monday thru Friday and 2 round trips on Saturday. Both of these routes may deviate up to 1/4 mile to pick someone up with 24 hours notice.

The moving force of Rural Community Transportation is its volunteer driver network. As it has in the past, the demand continues to increase for volunteers to bring people in from outlying areas to the town centers. Last year volunteer drivers drove well over 2 million miles for RCT.
