Chittenden County Transportation Authority

The Chittenden County Transportation Authority (CCTA), was chartered in 1973 to provide public transit services to municipalities in Chittenden County. CCTA logoA Board of Commissioners with two members representing each of the five member communities governs CCTA.

CCTA is a regional public transportation provider offering multi-modal transportation services including: fixed route bus service, park-and-ride lot express shuttle service, special weekly supermarket shuttles, neighborhood transportation for local schools, a county-wide ridesharing program, transportation for Medicaid recipients and contracted paratransit service for people who cannot use the bus. In FY2002, CCTA provided more than 1.6 million rides on its fixed route bus services.

In compliance with the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), CCTA provides door-to-door transportation services for CCTA Busthose who are unable to use bus service. A contract with Special Services Transportation Agency (SSTA) provides van service with up to twelve wheelchairlift equipped vans within a three-quarter mile radius of the CCTA fixed route service area. In FY2002, SSTA provided over 23,000 rides complementing the fixed route service.

Chittenden County’s Rideshare program matches hundreds of residents every year with car and vanpool partners. Under contract with VPTA and its agreement with the Department of Prevention, Assistance, Transition and Health Access (PATH), CCTA also provides over 140,000 bus, taxi and van rides to Medicaid eligible residents in need of transportation to medical services each year.

CCTA’s “Give Your Neighbor a Lift” program provides free bus transportation to nonprofit organizations. For every CCTA monthly pass purchased, one bus ticket is donated to a local nonprofit organization. CCTA donates nearly 300 free bus tickets each month to charitable organizations throughout the municipalities it serves. With its annual August “Feed Your Neighbor” campaign CCTA helps the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf collect nonperishable food for low-income families. In FY2002 CCTA accepted delivery of six new thirty-five foot transit buses to replace buses that have been in service since 1979 and ordered four replacement vans for the ADA service.

We also built four custom designed bus shelters and initiated a project to improve bus stop signage with funds awarded through the competitive Transportation Enhancements grant program.
