Ladies First Program

Ladies riding a public transit van to appointmentsLadies First, launched in FY96, is a federally funded statewide program that provides cancer screening and testing services for financially constrained women age 45 and older.

Transportation services to testing and screening appointments are provided through VPTA and its member organizations under a contract with the Vermont Department of Health. The transit providers are responsible for obtaining the most cost effective transportation for eligible women.

Since October 1995, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, any Vermont woman age 45 or more with limited income can arrange for free cancer screening by calling Ladies First at 1-800-508-2222. More than 700 health care providers and all of the state’s hospitals have signed on to bring services into every community.
